Life is busy. We run around like crazy. We run our world with a disorganized cluster of events including kids, spouses, and jobs. We have become a society of "over doing it." We drive ourselves into a world of stress. Like the Jet Blue flight attendant, Steve Slater, your emotional SNAP may be right around the corner. We all know what stress does to our sensibility, but what does it do to our feet?

Stress fractures are commonly found in the foot, especially in athletes and the elderly. What in goodness sakes is a stress fracture? It is not the world crashing down on you, and it won't push you to swear over airplane speakers. It may, however force you to slow down! Stress fractures are small hairline fractures in bones caused by repetitive micro-trauma.

Repetitive micro-trauma can be something as silly as walking, running, or dancing. It is quite simply, doing too much on your feet. Jumping into running schedules or increasing your walking regimen too quickly can overwork your feet, tire your muscles and slowly traumatize your bone into fracture. There are 28 bones in your foot sharing the stresses of life, and just like Steve Slater, they get tired from all of the abuse. When you are suffering from a stress fracture you will notice mechanical pain. Meaning you will encounter discomfort when using your foot and placing weight on it, but you will be nearly pain free when resting. Some swelling may be present but patients can often not remember any trauma to the foot. It is as if the pain comes out of nowhere and haunts you with every step. When your mind is stressed, you try to remove yourself from stressful situations. Take a few breaths, walk away and maybe poor a tall glass of wine and dust off the book you have wanted to read. Treating a stress fracture follows similar guidelines. Rest, rest and more rest. You overworked your foot and it needs time to repair the damage. Slow down, decrease your physical activity for a few weeks and slowly train back into a regular workout schedule. If you follow the rules, a stress fracture can heel in 4-6 weeks with simple conservative therapy. If you continue to run around like crazy, the stress fracture will SNAP and be a serious fracture that may need surgery. The recovery time becomes months and the stress in your life will undoubtedly increase.

Some people can push you over the edge, but don't push yourself over the edge! Slow down and enjoy life before you run yourself into a stress fracture.
